How Are GitHub Campus Experts?

  • Student Leaders: Passionate about technology and building inclusive communities.
  • Community Builders: Focused on bridging the gap between classrooms and industry.
  • Event Leaders: Organize conferences, meetups, and hackathons.
  • Open-Source Advocates: Maintain and contribute to open-source projects.

Program Highlights 🌍

  • Established: Running for 8 years, supporting over 470 students globally.
  • Local Leaders: Understand their school’s unique challenges.
  • Learning Opportunities: Access to resources and training for industry-valued skills.

Application Process 📝

  • Volume: Thousands of applications received each cycle.
  • Selection: Only a few are chosen to ensure quality support. In February 2024, 27 out of 3500+ applicants were selected. A similar number will be admitted in August.

What GitHub Campus Experts Are Not ❌

  • Brand Ambassadors: Not required to be a Git expert or computer science major.
  • Focus: Helping peers learn new technologies and best practices.

What Makes a Great Campus Expert? 🌟

  • Tech Enthusiast: Loves organizing tech events like hackathons, webinars, and workshops.
  • Knowledge Sharer: Enjoys teaching and helping others achieve their goals.
  • Team Player: Prefers teamwork and collaboration.
  • Community Focused: Driven to expand opportunities on campus.
  • Advocate: Promotes diversity and inclusion in tech.

Criteria to Apply 📋

  • 18 years or older.
  • Must have been active for at least six months.
  • Have more than a year left before graduation.
  • Be a GitHub user for at least six months.
  • Not be within three months of finishing your studies.
  • Not be enrolled in the GitHub Campus Advisors Program.
  • There is a limit to the number of Campus Experts per university. Check the support channels if you have questions.

What We Want to Learn About You 💡

  • Motivation: What drives you? Why do you do what you do?
  • Interest: Why do you want to join the program? What are your goals?
  • Growth and Potential: What skills do you want to learn, and how will they help you grow?
  • Contribution: What impact have you made or want to make on your campus and community?

How the Application Process Works 🛠️

Two Sections:

  1. Application Form: Describe community challenges, opportunities, and growth potential.
  2. Video Resume: Share more about yourself, including motivations and interests.

Timeline:

  • Application Form Submission: Deadline: August 31, 2024, 11:59 PM Pacific Time.
  • Review Period: Up to 1 month.
  • Video Resume Submission: Instructions provided if selected, with a 2-week submission window.
  • Final Review: Up to 3 weeks for video resume review. Notification of acceptance or declination.

After Submission 🔍

  • Review Time: Up to 3 weeks.
  • Outcome: Accepted applicants receive an invitation for GitHub Campus Experts Training.

Avoid Mistakes 🚫

  1. Be Specific: Don’t use vague answers. Provide clear and detailed responses.
  2. Avoid AI: Write your answers yourself. Don’t rely on AI tools.
  3. Give Full Details: Make sure all parts of your application are filled out completely.
  4. Meet Deadlines: Submit everything on time. Late submissions won’t be accepted.
  5. Follow Instructions: Stick to the application guidelines carefully.

Application Form Tips and Tricks 💡

  1. Show Enthusiasm: Explain why you’re excited about tech and community building.
  2. Highlight Your Work: Talk about any events you’ve organized or projects you’ve led.
  3. Be Detailed: Describe the challenges your community faces and how you can help.
  4. Explain Your Growth: Mention what new skills you want to learn and how they’ll help you.
  5. Show Your Impact: Explain how your involvement will benefit your campus and tech community.
  6. Be Genuine: Use your own words and experiences. Be yourself.

Changes in 2025 🔄

  • Application Frequency: Moving to once a year.
  • Announcement: Exact month will be announced later.
  • Cohort Size: Larger single cohort with the same number of Campus Experts selected.
